Uptown Girls, Brittany Murphy and Lover Girls
Tiktok slang is simultaneously elusive and omnipresent. One minute you’re like ‘wtf is that phrase’ then suddenly its everywhere. Cheugy, Dark Feminine Energy, Mascara.
One I’ve recently had algorithmically fed to me is “Lover Girl”
What is the Lover Girl?
Lover Girls are romantics, who were duped by hookup culture. We were told love is too much to ask for in the 21st century. Unapologetically girly and in search of passion. Lana del rey girls, romcom girlies. We want letters.
To my fellow lover girls out there, if you’re looking for something romantic and dirty, I highly recommend the Netflix adaptation of the Lady Chatterly’s Lover. A MASSIVELY popular formerly banned dirty lady book (Bellessa for 1932.) Cook from Skins is in it, and I loved me some Cookie.
Currently I’m watching Uptown Girls. Molly Gunn is certainly a lover girl. Mildly delusional but endlessly giving. And I would kill to be at her stoop sale (not that I could fit any of those sample sizes beaded gowns. Maybe we were same shoe size? No, just checked. She was a size 8, I’m a 10. The amount of information you can find about famous people online is mildly disturbing.)
Sheets of Egyptian Cotton was a song that didn’t need to go that hard. But it did. They did that for us.
It’s interesting to me that Lili Reinhart consistently gets Brittany Murphy as her celebrity lookalike. She really seemed like she was the best of the Riverdale cast, trapped in a show with bad writing. Those Netflix movies she did though, were not good. (Is it better to be shit in a hit? or a hit in shit? For this example, either could be argued.)
Almost no one has the magnetism of Brittany Murphy. “Elastic face” is a word I once read used to describe Amanda Bynes’ performance in she’s the man, and I think it is a comedic compliment that fits Brittany Murphy perfectly. She’s so expressive, I think her endearing qualities came so naturally that it never felt like she was acting.
My next lover girl movie will be the Wedding Date. Love me some Debbie Messing
