Internet Underground -SamaraSpeaks
Years ago, whilst scrolling through the digital mags of yesteryear, I stumbled across this incredibly compelling writer. Her piece, published by Cosmo and Marie Claire, detailed her experience as a receptionist in a Manhattan brothel at the height of New York punk. I was captivated by the life she’d led. I had to know more. I followed the link back to her blog, SamaraSpeaks, and inhaled her “Sordid Past” in a matter of hours.
I took notes on the NYC punk references, and her tragic love of Debby. Some people live lives so deeply human yet seemingly larger than life that it begs the question of a memoir. Samara is one of those, an OG hot girl in a smoky moral gray area. Her blog devolves into some very dark stuff in later years, I hope she’s doing alright. I hope she’s still writing too, she has such a raw talent for it.
If you decide to delve into the murky waters of Samara’s Sordid Past (and I highly recommend you do), her blog is still up. I’d start with the Phonegirl series.
